Whenever someone says “I say this with love,” they are about to insult you.

Okay, so it's happening, I'm afraid. Waste Of Time will now be updating fortnightly on Mondays for the foreseeable future. Sorry, at the risk of title-dropping, I can't spend as much time on this pet project of mine as I'd like to at the moment, I've got a novel to write and a black belt to earn, but I still want to keep this thing going! I hope you understand.

What's your novel about? Which martial art are you studying?

It's an adult fantasy about an oppressed group of magic users, and one group's attempt to save a nation, while beginning to question whether it deserves saving.

And Taekwondo! I'm only a red belt now, but the real hard work starts now. Plus it's really fun :)

Can they get past this? Or is this the beginning of the end of their relationship?

Once upon a time, when it was new, mime was actually interesting for its unusual, minimalist take on clowning. That was decades ago, and now most people are either creeped-out by clowns or bored with the schtick of stock gags that were ritualized into staleness long ago.

Anna is plausibly the most sympathetic to--and interested in--Paul's mime arts of the people he knows, considering her apparent fondness for clowns. This points at an important question: Just how bad is Paul's mime?

Fair point about the practices being similar (or originating from the same art), you'd think if she liked clowning she'd like mime... It's probably just an aesthetic thing. Or she's just a hater XD

Clowning and mime share a common origin in pantomime theater, and I undersold exactly how many decades ago they both come from: Clowning traces its roots to the work of Joseph Grimaldi at the beginning of the 19th century in London, and modern mime traces its lineage to the work of Jean-Gaspard Deburau later in the first half of the 19th century. Mime didn't come directly from clowning, although clowning was known and common enough that I'd imagine mime was influenced by it right from the start.

All of that is generally not important here though. Paul seems to be overly favouring the 'invisible box gag' tradition of mime. Anna's best response in this situation IMO is to draw upon the neglected slapstick tradition of mime in the vein of Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton. Maybe use an actual slapstick to whack Paul, and break or knock away the invisible box? If the loud noise just shocks him out of the bad mime routine by itself, I think most of us would call that a win. ;)

'I do this with love' ranks up there with 'no offence but' and 'with all due respect' as sentences that will always end in an insult.

Is it bad that my headcanon is that Paul was in full clown getup when they first met?

Haha, not bad at all, in fact that sounds downright plausible!

Wait, why isn't... Oh, right. Schedule change.

In the immortal words of an orange cat, I hate [half of] Mondays. Waste of Time got me emotionally set up to power through so many crappy first days of the week. How else do I get in the zone now!?

Aw, sorry! I must admit, I miss starting my week with this comic, there was a reason I picked Monday after all. Just another reason to try and work back up to weekly updates!
